On July 25, 40 kids, ages seven to nine, from the Boys & Girls Club of Chicago enjoyed a Retail Work Experience Day at JC Licht True Value in Chicago’s West Loop.
The educational day included an orientation followed by rotating activity stations. The boys and girls learned about the key station, the paint center and how to work the register. At the West Loop Community Garden, everyone learned about its sustainable filtration system.
Promoting Creativity and Artistry.
Other fun activities included working on picture frames, helping a local artist create a flag and flower mural, searching for store items, and helping organize caps and aisle displays.
General Manager Victor Lugardo helped the group construct a PVC pipe lamp, which was then presented to the True Value Club to display at their facility.

After a long day of learning and fun, everyone left with True Value aprons, sunglasses and office supplies.
In an interview in True Value’s blog, Victor explains, “My team and I got to show them there are possibilities and steps for getting to the next level…a few kids even told me they wanted jobs here! We don’t know where we’ll fit into their puzzle as they grow up, but hopefully a learning experience like this leads to a ripple effect that will inspire them in the years to come.”
We hope to see you all again sometime soon!
Thank you to True Value Foundation, General Manager Victor Lugardo, the JC Licht True Value team, True Value associates and the Boys & Girls Club of Chicago for hosting a day to remember!
