How to Choose Window Treatments for Your Child’s Bedroom | JC Licht

Choosing the right window treatments for your child’s room can be a bit overwhelming.

What is safe? How much light do I want to let in? Are they easy to clean? What styles are durable, practical, and will compliment my kid’s style when they are three or thirteen?

If you’re not sure what to look for, we’re here to help!

Safety

Something as simple as a dangling cord can pose life-threatening strangulation risk for your child. We recommend cordless, push and pull window treatments or a motorized lifting system like Hunter Douglas’ PowerView® Motorization, which will keep that dangerous cord out of reach!

Room Darkening and Blackout Shades

Room Darkening and blackout shades can be excellent for a child’s room because they block out most if not all light when closed. Being able to create a dark, comfortable environment at any time of day can be invaluable when nursing, waking up to an intense morning sun, or when a certain cranky toddler needs a nap.

When considering room darkening window treatments, the three core principles to keep in mind are opaque materials, darker colors and blocked light gaps. Hunter Douglas’ Duette® LightLock™ System is the most effective at completely blocking out all light.
Other options include adding a room-darkening or blackout liner, which can be sewn into the fabric of your Vignette shade or the Duolite® option, which offers maximum light control by using two separate fabric panels of differing opacities in a single shade.

Easy To Clean

Here are a few types of window treatments we think are best suited for a child’s room as they are super easy to clean.

Cellular Shades. All you need to do is a light sweep with your vacuum and these do not need to be cleaned on a frequent basis.

Roller Shades. Due to their smooth surface, you can easily vacuum or wipe down the fabric with a damp cloth in no time.

Faux Wood Blinds or aluminum blinds. Unlike real wood, faux wood and aluminum blinds can be vacuumed or wiped down with a damp cloth.

Vertical blinds. These are the ultimate anti-dust choice and are just as east to clean with a duster or damp cloth.

Additionally, aluminum horizontal blinds are also treated with Dust Shield™, an anti-static paint additive that inhibits dust build-up.

Window Treatments That Grow With Your Child

When selecting window treatments for you child’s bedroom, you want to select a color and style that will compliment your child as they grow.

Whites, blacks, and neutrals such as browns are always a safe choice, but don’t get intimidated! Our experts will discuss all the different styles and colors during your FREE in-home consultation.
