Your window treatments are one of the fixtures in your home that you use the most. You rely on them to maintain your privacy and keep your home comfortable throughout the day. So when a blind breaks, as it might eventually, it’s essential to know how to take care of it. Is this something that can be repaired, or do you need to start shopping for new window treatments?
Common Issues with Blinds
You can get your blinds repaired! Depending on the issue, you may even be able to tackle it yourself. Some of the most common ways blinds break are also the most straightforward issues to fix.
Cord Problems
The strings on your blinds ensure that they move up and down smoothly and evenly. If one of them is stuck or broken, operating your blinds will be difficult and frustrating. Luckily, there are some tricks you can do at home to get your blinds moving again.
If your blinds are crooked:
- Make sure the cords are taut and free of knots.
- Smooth them out and work through any tangles.
- If there’s still a problem, take them down and lay them on the floor to troubleshoot.
If you’re having a hard time lowering your blinds:
- Move the pull cords from side to side to try to release any tangles.
- If that doesn’t work, take your blinds down and check the mechanism at the top, called the cord lock.
- Make sure the cords aren’t overlapping within the cord lock.
- If they’re still stuck, manually push the gear within the cord lock until the cords loosen.
Broken Slats
A broken slat is a much more apparent issue than a problem with the cords. Before calling a repair shop, try to contact the manufacturer or the store you bought your blinds from, as they may have extra slats you can install yourself.
Professional Blind Repair
If the problem looks more complex than you can handle or basic troubleshooting didn’t help with the issue, you may want to contact a professional to have your blinds repaired. It may feel daunting to find a repair shop, but you’ll be surprised at how accessible they are.
Start by contacting the store where you bought your blinds. Many vendors have complementary repair programs, so they will be happy to repair your blinds. If you purchased your window treatments online or from a big box store, this might not be an option, but that doesn’t mean you’re entirely out of luck.
