Benjamin Moore Color of the Year and Color Trends 2021.

Benjamin Moore has long been creating color palettes meant to intrigue designers and homeowners across the globe. On October 14th in a Facebook Live video announcement, they released their long-awaited Color of the Year and Color Trends 2021 to viewers across the world.

Although the selection process actually began in 2019, the color palette and principal color seem to be exactly what the stressed-out world currently needs. How did they manage that? According to Benjamin Moore, it all started in the kitchen. A team of designers and experts decided that they wanted the Color of the Year 2021 to be inspired by vegetable dyes, and the more grounded, muted colors that can come from that look.

The Palette itself was inspired by farmers’ markets across the globe, while still aiming to be a flexible color that outlasted yearly trends. A multifaceted color that remained timeless was the ultimate goal – and Color of the Year and Color Trends 2021 achieved that look effortlessly.

The kitchen is arguably the most renovated room in the house. It’s also arguably the most versatile. The kitchen is where we cook. It’s where we entertain. It’s where most of us now do our office work, and where our kids do their school work. The kitchen is often the central point of a home, and Benjamin Moore’s director of color marketing wanted to reflect that multi-functionality in their Color of the Year and Color Trends 2021.

Color and design experts tout the Aegean Teal 2136-40 as an intriguing mix of blue, green, and gray. This mid-tone color is inviting and elegant while maintaining depth, complexity, and versatility.

According to the live Facebook video announcement, this color was chosen in order to appeal to everyone. That includes those of us who love color and use it freely in the home. Additionally, this hidden gem is the perfect paint color due to its ability to meet the needs of even the most staunch lover of neutral tones. The added bit of grey makes this color a soothing update to any room without being overwhelming.

During these unstable and hectic times, it’s natural to yearn for stability and calm. The blue-green shade of Aegean Teal 2136-40 wonderfully encompasses that feeling. It feels welcoming, yet lived-in and reflects the qualities that many of us associate with our home.

The Palette itself invokes a sunbaked quality, bringing warm and elegant mid-tones into your home. These colors share a few common traits: a sense of feeling “lived-in” being one of them. This palette feels organic and inviting, and goes well in almost any room in the home. You can really feel free to let your imagination run wild.

Since these colors are so versatile, there is really no way to go wrong when implementing them in your space. Some LC Licht suggestions include:

  • To bring a feeling of calm and wellbeing during your no-doubt hectic workday, use Gray Cashmere 2138-60 for a soothing accent wall in your home office.
  • Potters Clay 1221 easily brings an earthy warmth to your private sanctuary when renovating a bedroom.
  • For an unexpected but soothing twist, paint kitchen cabinets with Aegean Teal 2136-40. This will bring a modern yet approachable feeling to any kitchen.
  • Give the millwork in your living room new life with the plummy Amazon Soil 2115-30. Painting the backsplash of your millwork a striking, yet balanced Rosy Peach 2089-20 will integrate multiple colors on the 2021 palette along with bringing warmth.

Finally, don’t be afraid to play with light, as the light will bring out different undertones in the color. Different lighting can even make your chosen color appear warmer or cooler.

Choosing the best sheen

With the beautiful paint colors, courtesy of Benjamin Moore, you can choose the best sheen for your space. A sheen is essentially how shiny the finished color will appear. With Aegean Teal, a shinier sheen like a semi-gloss will allow the color to change with the lighting, from green to blue to grey.

A semi-gloss is traditionally great for doors, cabinets, and trim. An eggshell finish will still allow for some sheen and allow your color to change with the lighting (great for naturally lighted rooms), but will be less reflective. This is great for high-trafficked walls in areas like the dining room and kitchen.

Matte will allow for a flatter looking color consistent throughout the day. A completely matte finish is great for any wall or ceiling. The Color of the Year 2021, Aegean Teal 2136-40, and any of the other Benjamin Moore Color Trends 2021 for that matter, will look great in both matte and glossy sheens depending on their desired use.

Feel free to ask any of our helpful staff members at one of our 48 locationsthroughout the Greater Chicago area for more information on choosing the right sheen for your paint and remember to pick up the Color Trends 2021 brochure.
