With over 15 years of experience in design, construction, and real estate, Margaret Spaan, Principal of Restore Northshore, brings a uniquely holistic approach to Chicago interior design and North Shore design-build projects.

Her full-service firm guides clients through every stage of the process — from space planning and design aesthetic development to product sourcing and construction — creating homes that are not only functional, but deeply personal.

Margaret’s philosophy is rooted in one belief: every home should reflect the people who live in it. Through thoughtful planning, layered design, and strong client relationships, she creates spaces that feel cohesive, intentional, and truly lived in.

We sat down with Margaret to learn more about her approach, her love of kitchens, and how she brings color and character into every project.

JC Licht: Margaret, tell us, how did you get started in design and construction?
Margaret: I actually fell into it. I spent more than 10 years in real estate, where I helped clients envision what their homes could be. I also remodeled two of my own homes, and that’s really where everything clicked. During the 2010 real estate crash, I was feeling burnt out, and a client took a leap of faith on me — and the rest is history.

Design Philosophy

JC Licht: What would you say is your “superpower” as a designer?
Margaret: I believe every house should house your soul. My superpower is pulling my clients’ individual styles together into something fluid — where each space reflects them, but also connects naturally to the next. It’s like a family — no two elements are the same, but they all belong together.

JC Licht: Do you approach city and North Shore projects differently?
Margaret: Yes — people live differently depending on their environment. In the city, it might be more about dining out or maximizing smaller spaces, while suburban homes often focus on entertaining and indoor-outdoor living. Those lifestyle differences really shape the design.

JC Licht: What do you find most rewarding about your work?
Margaret: Transforming spaces in a way that creates joy and connection for my clients. That’s really what it’s all about.

Design-Build, Space Planning & Renovations

JC Licht: Your team offers a full design-build experience. How does that benefit your clients?
Margaret: We’re much more cohesive and collaborative. When one team is guiding the entire process, it allows everything to flow more smoothly. Most clients only do a renovation once or twice, so having a team that can anticipate challenges and guide them through it makes a huge difference.

JC Licht: Space planning is a big part of your work — what do you focus on when reimagining a layout?
Margaret: I like spaces to “talk” to each other. That often means opening things up, but not necessarily creating one large undefined space. Each area should still feel purposeful, while naturally flowing into the next.

JC Licht: What is your favourite space to design?
Margaret: Always the kitchen. I originally wanted to be a chef, so I’ve always seen it as the heart of the home. It’s where everyone gathers — the energy really comes from that space.

JC Licht: How do you help clients feel confident during what can be a stressful process?
Margaret: Trust is key. Remodeling is one of the most stressful life events, so it’s about guiding clients, preparing them for what’s ahead, and helping them balance emotional decisions with practical ones. When that trust is there, everything works better.

Color, Detail & Finishing Touches

JC Licht: How would you describe your approach to color?
Margaret: I tend to start with warm neutrals — shades like White Dove or Sea Pearl — and then layer in color through accents. That might be through rugs, textiles, or even inside built-ins. It gives clients flexibility to change things over time without redoing everything.

JC Licht: Do you have a favourite way to introduce bold color?
Margaret: I love using it in smaller spaces. We recently did a powder room with raspberry tones, and it completely transformed the space. Those moments can really make an impact without overwhelming the home.

JC Licht: Are there any colors you’re excited to use more of right now?
Margaret: Pink — which surprises me! I’ve always leaned neutral, but lately I’ve been enjoying incorporating soft pops of pink into projects.

JC Licht: What role do details play in your designs?
Margaret: They’re everything. I call them the “jewelry” of the home — hardware, plumbing fixtures, finishing touches. But at the same time, I always say: if it feels like too much, it is. Less is more.
