Blistering

The Problem: Bubbling and blistering of the paint surface resulting from the loss of adhesion and lifting of the paint film from the underlying surface. If not corrected, this condition will lead to the paint peeling.

Causes: Can include painting on a hot surface in direct sunlight, applying an oil-based or Alkyd paint over a damp, wet surface, exposing a freshly applied latex paint film to dew, high humidity and rain, or moisture passing through interior or exterior walls.

How-to-fix: The first step is determining whether the bubbles were caused by heat or moisture. This can be done by examining the substrate and back of the blistered paint. If only the newest top coat is blistered it was probably caused by heat and can be remediated by sanding/scraping following by priming and painting with a quality acrylic latex interior or exterior paint. If blisters contain several coats and the bare surface is exposed, the source of the moisture must be removed followed by the steps noted above.
